Hello USA West

by Jim Knaggs on March 7, 2010

Now that new appointments have been announced and the word seems to be getting out, let me give a shout to the USA Western Territory. Based upon the orders of the General of The Salvation Army and what we believe is God’s good plan, Carolyn and I are coming to the West as of 1st July 2010. Hallelujah!

Whilst (that’s what we say in Oz) we take no delight in leaving our many friends in Australia, we are blessed to know we will soon be joining the inspired forces of the USA Western Territory. We only know the territory from a distance, but we do know it is dynamic, moving forward and fully engaged in SA mission. We salute you and look forward to connecting with you in the joy of Jesus and the overt demonstration of His love in practical ways.

Leaving here will be hard, but we’re glad to be coming.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”- Psalm 139:23-24

  3. Jim and Carolyn:
Do you realize that you only have to go north, not east to enter your new Territory? In fact, Guam and Saipan, part of the Hawaiian and Pacific Islands Division, where there is vibrant Army ministry, is in the same time zone as Melbourne, only North of the equator. It is a vast territory covering 7 time zones, 7335 miles from Guam to Denver and 3000 miles from El Paso, Texas to Fairbanks, Alaska – wide open spaces where the deer, antelope, buffalo, bear, moose, elk and a few maverick Salvationists roam. This vastness impacts our vision: Big and bold! Not to mention Hollywood where the Academy Awards will be presented tonight – big, bold and innovative films being honored. Welcome to a big, bold and innovative Territory where the likes of Joe he Turk were inspired to become one of us. You are not only welcomed with open arms, but your leadership style is perfectly fitted for the Wild and Woolly West.

    • Amazing facts from an amazing leader. Thanks.

      • Not to mention that you will be the Commander of two Territories: USW and Guam (A US Territory), one Commonwealth (of the Northern Mariana Islands), and three countries (USA, The Marshall Islands and Federated States of Micronesia).

Commissioners; I hope the USA Western Territory will realise that they do not get you until July 1st. When you leave however there will be many who will have a heavy heart, but for me I will try and encourage as many as I can to brighten their bhearts with the wonderful way God has used you at a time when we needed His power to be demonstated just as it has been.
There is a bright tomorrow but the sun is wonderfully shining today! Hallelujah! One who counts you as a dear good friend! Alan R Laurens (Major)

  6. Commissioner Knaggs -

I came to the Western Territory in the early 90s and immediately fell in love! As Joe Noland says above, it is a vast territory geographically, but also a deep territory spiritually. Although we are currently “on loan” at NHQ, we anticipate the arrival of you and your wife as you lead us to new frontiers in the Kingdom of God!

  7. Commissioners Knaggs:

Welcome! We look forward to your ministry with the cadets and staff of CFOT during your Sunday chapel visits with us. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you prepare for your new adventure and ministry in the great (and very expansive) Western Territory.

    God bless!

A warm USA West welcome to both of you! I don’t know about the West being “Wild and Wooly” as Commissioner Joe Noland says, but we hope you will find us to be “Warm and Welcoming”! My young adult daughters are very impressed that you blog and tweet so you already scored points with them. Thank you for this glimpse into who you are and your thoughts. We look forward with anticipation to your welcome meeting and the years ahead!

    • Thank you for your warm welcome to the West. We are having mixed emotions about leaving Oz and our friends here, but following God is our heart’s desire. We’re convinced He is sending us to one of the most exciting territories in TSA and look forward to sharing in the ministry of the gospel with you.

Many of us Westerners, who know you by reputation, are wondering how we got so lucky. Oh wait—God’s plan! Love it! We can’t wait to have you in the West (even though I’m currently at NHQ).

    • Like you, we’re trusting God for each day of our lives. When the day comes that we enter the Western Territory, we will do so with great hope.

  11. Hello Commissioners Knaggs and welcome to the West! As the adult Bible class teacher at the Torrance Corps in Southern California, I’d like to invite you to the corps and the Bible class whenever you are not traveling the length and breadth of this vast territory. It would be our pleasure to welcome you both!

    Blessings today!

    • Thanks, Edie. I understand Torrence is close to where we live and I love to study the Bible. we’ll look forward to stopping by to worship the Lord.

  12. Welcome to the West (and LA). The staff and residents at Alegria, SoCal’s HIV/AIDS residential program, would love to have you and Carolyn over for lunch once you have settled in. Hold out until the fall and you will have to come to one of our art exhibitions (www.artandshelter.org).

    Jim and Carolyn Knaggs,
    Commissioners.
    Sorry to lose you.
Happy for the USA West – they’ll love you too.
You’ll be able to share with them some of the values and ideas of the Aussie SA culture. The Aussie Army and the USA West Army have a lot in common. You’ll have no trouble re-adapting. Good for you both, good for the Army, good for the fulfilling of God’s purposes.
    General Eva
