Prime Minister Kevin Rudd

by Jim Knaggs on November 23, 2009

It was our opportunity to meet again with the Prime Minister this past week. He honoured the Australian Christian Lobby Conference in Canberra by giving the Keynote and being available to meet with a few church leaders in a private reception.

His keynote was carefully given, often walking the line of knowing his audience and declaring the realities of Australian life and government as he sees it. In all, his remarks were convincing and appropriate. Great celebration burst when he declared his decision to extend government support of existing school chaplains for two more years. Further study and evaluation will be considered in this time frame to determine its continuance in the succeeding years.

In the more personal setting he was gracious and personal. As he spoke with Carolyn and me it seemed as if he was fully focused upon us and The Salvation Army while balancing his sense of humour and intellect.

I’m grateful for a national leader who is available to the grass roots of the country and for his keen interest in seriously reducing homelessness in Australia.

Great news about the chaplaincy funding! Is an answer to prayers – and ensures that the schools here in Healesville with chaplains continue to have them!

That is good news. Chaplains play a very important role in our school, and all parents no matter what background they have, appreciate the work and support given to their children by the chaplain. Ours has started a weekly lunch time bible class and have an average of 30 children attending. God is good allowing this work to continue.
