Secret Societies

by Jim Knaggs on July 3, 2009

One of the requirements of officership in TSA is that you are not a member of a secret society. It takes me back to university days when there was an ant-war group (Viet Nam) that I came close to joining. At least I didn’t join formally. It was called SDS…Students for a Democratic Society. Now I just Googled it and discovered that a similar group has recently restarted with the same name. I don’t know what they stand for or against.

Sometimes it feels as if being a Christian is something of a secret society. Religion is not a favourite subject in public, and if you want to interrupt a good conversation with a stranger, just incorporate a few questions or comments about God. So, like you, I resist the silent and secretive approach to faith, and instead pledge to declare boldly and authentically, the love of God for women and men through Jesus. Let’s not keep it to ourselves. Let’s open up and let people know.

Isaiah 60:1 (NIV)
1 “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.

What an enlightened and refreshing sign of the times when the TC can have a blog – and one which is relevant and inspirational!
Does the term “Secret Societies” include Freemasonry? Masons have traditionally claimed not to be a “secret society” simply a “Society with secrets”. A few years ago, Candidates had to sign a document indicating whether or not they were Masons, and if they were currently or in the past, members, were required to renounce the organisation and its methods.
It;s my understanding that the Salvation Army ihn the USA receives very significant funding assistance from Freemasonry and as a result has taken an expedient attitude to the organisation.

Thanks for your comment. Normally, Freemasonry is thought of as a secret society. I know of Salvationists who I respect that are members. They too would describe it as a society with secrets.
