People Worse Off
The Salvation Army today releases a new survey of 1500 people who attend our community support services (40 centres were part of the survey). Amongst the findings are:
60% of people visiting community support services at The Salvation Army for assistance believe they are worse off or a lot worse off because of the financial crisis.
More than 40% of clients are ‘pessimistic or very pessimistic’ about the next 12 months.
22% have experienced new conflict in their family because of the worsening conditions.
53% have cut down on basic necessities. 58% have cut down on luxuries.
17% of clients said they have moved to ‘more affordable housing’.
Close to 50% of people in the survey are unemployed or looking for work and nearly 40% are not in the labour force.
The survey was done 3 weeks ago by The Salvation Army with the input of Swinburne University academic, David McKenzie.
